Abstract

The reaction of CO with Co(112̄0) has been investigated by LEED, UPS, EELS, Auger and sp measurements. CO is moleculariy adsorbed on Co(112̄0) below 300 K without showing a long range ordering. The isosteric heat of molecular adsorption is 143 kJ/mol and independent of coverage. Above 300 K dissociative and molecular adsorption of CO compete on Co(112̄). The dissociation is an activated process with an energy of activation of about 85 kJ/mol.
