Abstract

Abstract Liquid-state IR and Raman spectra and solid-state IR spectra were obtained for 1-bromo-3-methylbutane and 1-bromo-4-methylpentane. The butane exists as a mixture of PC and PH conformers in the liquid and amorphous solid, but only the PH conformer is present in the crystalline solid. The pentane exists as a mixture of PC,PH, and P'H conformers in the liquid and amorphous solid. The solid could not be made to crystallize. The observed bands are assigned to the appropriate conformers with the aid of normal coordinate calculations.
