Abstract

Abstract We describe the preparation of several materials in the form of free-standing ultrafine fibers. The materials are made by evaporating material in an inert gas in the presence of electric fields. Fiber diameters are typically 100–300 A and irregular. Lengths of fibers or fiber bundles extend up to 10 cm. Materials range from transition metals, non-transition metals, semimetals and semiconductors. In most cases, they appear to be the smallest free-standing microwires of these lengths that have been made from these materials.
