General and versatile synthetic methods have been developed for the preparation of a large variety of 2,2'-bipyridines bearing two various perfluoroalkylated side chains with an ester or a methylene junction in the 4,4'-positions, e.g., 4,4'-bis2''-(F-alkyl)ethenyl-2,2'-bipyridines, 4,4'-bis(F-alkyl)alkyloxycarbonyl-2,2'-bipyridines, and 4,4'-bis2''-alkyl)ethenyloxycarbonyl-2,2'-bipyridines
