Abstract

5-Cyano-2H-thiopyran and a number of derivatives have been obtained in fair to good yields by heating compounds with the system CCCSCCCN in silicon oil; 4-cyano-2-methylthiophenes are formed by heating these systems in dimethylsulfoxide in the presence of diisopropylamine. The starting systems were prepared by nucleophilic addition of 2-propynethiol, HCCCH2SH, to cyanoalkynes RCCCN (R H or alkyl).
