Abstract

The relative photoionization cross sections of a homologous series of alkanes, alkenes, alkyl chlorides, aldehydes, ethers, ketones, and alcohols have been determined at 11.6–11.8 eV using an argon resonance lamp. Correlations have been made between the photoionization cross sections and the molecular polarizability, the diamagnetic susceptibility, and the electron ionization cross sections of the molecules. No general correlation was found to exist but linear correlations were observed within each molecular class of compounds. These results are in general agreement with earlier studies on the electron ionization cross sections at 70 eV.
