Abstract

Nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra due to /sup 35/Cl, /sup 69/Ga, /sup 81/Br, and /sup 127/I nuclei have been recorded for complexes of Ga/sub 2/X/sub 4/ (X = Cl, Br, I) and GaX/sub 3/ (X = Cl, Br) with 1,4-dioxane. The electron density on the Ga atom donated by the O atom has been calculated according to the Townes-Dailey theory. The results show that the electron transfer from O to Ga is considerably smaller in the Ga/sub 2/X/sub 4/ complex than in the GaX/sub 3/ complex. The phase transition of Ga/sub 2/Cl/sub 4/ x 2C/sub 4/H/sub 9/O/sub 2/ has been examined by measuring the temperature dependence of the NQR frequency and /sup 35/Cl spin-lattice relaxation times. A second-order phase transition occurs near 181 K. The molecular motion in GaCl/sub 3/ x C/sub 4/H/sub 8/O/sub 2/ has also been discussed on the basis of the observed /sup 35/Cl spin-lattice relaxation time. 23 references, 9 figures, 4 tables.
