Abstract

After an introduction to what is required of a high-performance permanent magnet material, a brief description is given of the Concerted European Action on Magnets, a unique cooperative research programme which involves more than fifty participants (a third of them industrial) from nine countries in the EEC. There follows an account of recent progress in understanding the intrinsic magnetic properties of Nd2Fe14B, and other isostructural compounds and solid solutions. Finally some directions in the search for new iron-rich phases with a high Curie point and uniaxial anisotropy are indicated.
