AbstractTwo different strategies are applied to prepare monobactams such as SQ 26,180 (II) or the aztreonam precursor (V): sulphonation of an N‐unsubstituted β‐lactam like (I) (e.g with the DMF complex of SO3) or cyclization (e.g using K2CO3) of an acyl sulphamate of type (IV), obtained from threonine (III).
