AbstractWhile the known reaction of aromatic compounds with Mn(III) acetate (V) gives mainly acetoxymethylated products (by attack of carboxymethyl radicals), aldehydes such as (II)/(VII) and/or acids such as (III)/(VIII) are obtained in the presence of malonic acid (IV).
