AbstractIsoindolylbutanoic acid (I) reacts with aromatic imines [e.g. (II) and (IV)] to give trans‐β‐lactams [e.g. (III) and (V)] stereoselectively via [2 + 2]‐cycloaddition of a ketene intermediate and imines.
