Abstract

AbstractThe results of a combined electrochemical, XPS, and LEED study indicate 1. that the initial chemisorption and quasi‐reversible stage of electrooxidation of the Pd(100) surface in 0.05 M aqueous HClO4 is sharply defined on the potential scale and takes place around 0.6 V, 2. an incipient PdO (hydrated) phase is present on the surface at 1 V, and 3. an intermediate oxygen state (precursor state in the formation of PdO) can be isolated on the surface by an electrooxidation/reduction treatment of the electrode at potentials negative to the potential range of place exchange between Pd and O atoms.
