Abstract

AbstractThe icosahedral quasicrystal Ca15Au60Sn25 (I) and the corresponding 1/1 and 2/1 approximants Ca3Au14.36Sn4.38 (II) and Ca13Au47.2Sn28.1 (III), resp., are prepared from Ca/Au/Sn mixtures (850 °C, 24 h) in the ratio of 14.5/60.1/25.4 for (I) (quenching, 90% yield), 13/67/20 for (II) (annealing at 500 °C for three weeks, 90% yield), and 15/52.5/32.5 for (III) (annealing at 400 °C for three weeks, <95% yield).
