Abstract Phenol reacts only at the oxygen site when opposed to chloroform in the presence of potassium fluoride and sulfolane. (Difluoromethoxy) benzene and phenyl ortho- formate are formed. This leads to questions about the mechanism of the Reimer-Tiemann reaction.
