Abstract

AbstractThe title samarium compound (IV) ‐ prepared in situ from benzyl chloromethyl ether (I) ‐ is shown to be a valuable synthetic equivalent of the α‐hydroxyacetyl anion and may replace multistep procedures which are used up to now for the assembly of a dihydroxyacetone side chain in the synthesis of natural compounds.
