Abstract

Crossed beam studies confirm that excited iron atoms are produced from primary collisions of metastable argon with Fe(CO) 5. Penning ionization occurs with a much larger cross section than dissociative fluorescence, and all the energeticaly accessible fragment ions are observed from ionization by metastable argon and neon.
