Abstract

The adamantane-structured compound CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3 (III) reacts on ultra-violet irradiation with the hexacarbonyls of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten to give the complexes CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3Cr(CO) 5 (IV), CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3-[Cr(CO) 5] 2 (V), CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3[Cr(CO) 5] 3 (VI), [CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3] 2Mo(CO) 4 (VII) and [CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3] 2W(CO) 4(VIII). CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3 can behave at most as tri-dentate ligand coordinating via arsenic atoms and being non-chelating. [ fac-CH 3C(CH 2AsO) 3Mo(CO) 3] n (IX) with a probably polymeric structure, can be obtained on treatment of III with C 7H 8Mo(CO) 3(C 7H 8  1,3,5-Cycloheptatrien). All new compounds have been characterized by mass spectrometry and infrared, Raman, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The vibrational spectra are discussed in detail.
