Abstract

Microscopically similar seeds of Abrus precatorius and Ormosia (Leguminosae) can be distinguished by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) in several systems on account of their content of indoles and alkaloids, respectively. N-methyltryptophan is a highly characteristic ingredient of A. precatorius . Its presence in seed extracts can be confirmed by functional TLC. Microcrystalloptic tests in TLC eluates for indoles of A. precatorius and alkaloids of Ormosia were developed. Values for the total indole content in a number of A. precatorius samples from various geographical origins are reported. Complete analytical results can be obtained from one seed. Identification of A. precatorius seeds can be carried out irrespective of their geographical origin, state of maturity, age and color. The proposed tests are also applicable to damaged, crushed, powdered or cooked seed material.
