Abstract

The iodine deficiency theory of simple goiter requires that there should bo an inverse relationship between the size of the thyroid gland and its iodine content. Various workers have undertaken to determine the normal weight and normal iodine content of the thyroid, with greatly varying results. Some of the discrepancies in iodine content can perhaps he due to inaccuracies in analytical method, particularly in the earlier work. Differences in gross weight and percentages of dry matter cannot be so explained. Most attempts to arrive at normal values have been made in regions of a greater or less degree of iodine deficiency, which fact in itself casts suspicion on the reliability of the findings as representing strictly normal glands. Furthermore, not all investigators have indicated that their selection of glands for analysis has been controlled by histological examination.
