Abstract
Feeding behaviour of Aphelenchus avenae in liquid media is similar to that in agar culture of fungal hyphae with the exception that no membrane is penetrated; thrusting of the stylet and pumping of the oesophagus both occurred. Penetration of a membrane is not obligatory in the feeding process but cessation of body movement, bending of the head, stylet thrusting, the stylet remaining exserted and pumping of the metacorpus are. Stylet thrusting occurred in response to glucose and/or amino acids but there was some evidence that a third, unknown factor from culture filtrate of Rhizoctonia solani is involved. Pumping of the metacorpus occurred only after stylet thrusting and in response to amino acids.
