Abstract

AbstractGibb's hypothesized dependence of chemical potential upon state of stress has been qualitatively confirmed by direct measurement, using solid‐state electrolytes both to transmit nonhydrostatic load and to measure (through a change in electrical potential) a corresponding change in chemical potential. Quantitative agreement with Gibbs predictions may not be possible because of the inevitable presence of nonideal chemical heterogeneities near the surfaces of solids.
