Abstract

Abstract Metastable β-phase Cr 40 Ti 60 alloys, prepared by quenching, were investigated by elastic neutron scattering. As the average neutron scattering length of Cr 40 Ti 60 is very small, the coherent scattering is dominated by the partial structure factor S cc which portrays the chemical fluctuations. Significant deviations from a random distribution are found. During annealing at 450°C the extent of the chemical short-range order (CSRO) increases irreversibly to distances up to several lattice parameters. During heating above 500°C the CSRO persists while pronounced topological disordering occurs.
