Abstract

The spectroscopic characteristics of 4-(2-N,N-dimethylamino)ethylamino-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,8-naphthalimide have been investigated in organic solvents with different polarity viewing its usage for the design of a new heterogeneous sensor for metal ions and antibacterial textile. New functional groups have been introduced in cotton fabric by treatment with chloroacetyl chloride as a bridge between dye and cellulose macromolecules. Varying modification degree of cotton surface allowed determining its effect on the sensor properties of the new material. Colorimetric analysis has been used for testing the ability of cotton samples to detect Zn(II) and Cu(II) ions. Antimicrobial activity of the 1,8-naphthalimide dye has been investigated against different pathogenic strains. The obtained cotton fabric has been found to reduce the growth of B. cereus, A. johnsonii and P. aeruginosa.
