Abstract

Cyperus rotundus Linn. vernacularly called “Nut Grass” and locally known as “Motha” is an important medicinal plant belongs to the family Cyperaceae. It is grows widely, distributed in Mediterranean basin areas and also found in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. The underground nodules are used in India, China and Japan against spasms, stomach disorders and irritation of bowel. Cyperus rotundus used as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, nervine tonic, diuretic, antiperiodic, and treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, leprosy, bronchitis, amenorrhea, blood disorders and has cooling, intellect promoting and antipyretic activities. The underground nuts of Cyperus rotundus contain 0.20 to 0.60 % essential oil with terpene, flavonoids, ®-sitosterol, ascorbic acid and main chemical constituents is cyperene. The detail of the plant, chemical constituents and its pharmacological activity has been described in this review.
