Abstract

The precision of a single spectrophotometric determination of ruthenium as the dithio-oxamide complex is shown to be about 0.5% and to be limited by chemical rather than instrumental irreproducibility. The molar absorptivity of this complex is (1.11±0.02).104lmole-cm at 654 nm, considerably smaller than reported previously. It is shown that solutions of ruthenium for use as spectrophotometric standards may be prepared with a precision of about 0.3% by dissolving weighed portions of the pure metal powder in alkaline sodium hypochlorite at pH ca. 10, taking precautions to avoid the loss of RuO4 during the dissolution.
