Abstract

The chemical effects of chromium neutron capture recoils produced in mixed crystals of the type K3Cr/C2O4/3−K3Al/C2O4/3 and K3Cr/CN/6−K3Al/CN/6 have been investigated. The initial parent retentions in the investigated mixed crystals have been determined using solvent extraction techniques and making use of 0.32 MeV photopeak for51Cr produced as a result of thermal neutron capture. It was found that initial chromium parent retentions varies linearly with parent mole fraction in the mixed crystals. The retention and non-retention results have been discussed in terms of a mechanistic model involving metal and ligand vacancies exchange and substitution reactions.
