Abstract

Dissolution of the γ-irradiated chlorides and sulphates of sodium and potassium in the aqueous solution of sodium nitrate results in the reduction of the latter into nitrite. The yield of nitrite has been studied as a function of γ-dose given to the salt and the amount and particle size of the salt. The results are explained on the basis of colour centres produced in the salts during irradiation. The F centre concentration and G(NO 2 −) formed are also estimated.
