Abstract

SUMMARY A trial involving several chemical weedicides is described. All except zinc sulphate were applied as pre-emergence contact sprays; zinc sulphate was applied to the soil following sowing of the slash pine seed. The mineral oils, “Vacuum” White Spirit (50 gal/ac) and “Sovacide P.Y.” (25 gal/ac) gave satisfactory control of weeds. They did not affect germinative capacity and caused no subsequent mortality of slash pine, and had no effect on height growth or output of plantable stock. They are therefore suitable for use as pre-emergence weedicides. Sodium pentachlorphenate gave excellent control of weeds, but reduced germination of slash pine and caused heavy mortality among the seedlings which did emerge. Zinc sulphate showed the same defects, and had the further disadvantage of a delayed effect on weed species.
