Abstract

Cleaning Stayman and Starking Delicious apples by brushing in detergent and hot water followed by application of wax did not interfere with the effectiveness of scald control by 1800 and 2700 ppm ethoxyquin applied about two weeks previously in a dip treatment. Alternatively, scald could be prevented by the application of ethoxyquin-impregnated paper wraps to apples following waxing. A significant reduction in scald was also obtained through the waxing process or immersion of fruit in hot water.
