Abstract

Leaf constituents of two varieties of Evodia micrococca have been investigated. Both varieties contained palmitic acid and n-hentriacontane but while E. micrococca F. Muell. var. micrococca yielded pinoresinol dimethyl ether and a trace of essential oil, E. micrococca var. pubescens Fraser & Vickery yielded (+)-sesamin and a larger quantity of a very different essential oil. By the nitration of pinoresinol dimethyl ether, a 5,5',6,6'-tetranitro derivative has been prepared and the structure of Freudenberg and Dietrich's (1953) lactone has been clarified. The ultraviolet absorption spectra of the four dinitroveratroles are included.
