Abstract

Extensive phytochemical analysis of the aerial part of H. coadunatum, a rare insular endemism of the Canary Islands, has resulted in the isolation and identification of several metabolites of diverse classes with interesting biological properties. Examples include flavonoids, luteolin and apigenin glycosides, quercetin and kaempferol glycosides, xanthones, phloroglucinols and other common metabolites. The flavone glycoside, 8-C-β-L- arabinopiranosylapigenin 5 and its hexaacetate 5a are described here for first time. A conformational analysis of orientin octaacetate was carried out using molecular mechanics (PCMODEL 9.2, MMX force field). The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, viz. 1D and 2D NMR experiments, chemical study, and comparison with literature data.
