Abstract

The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation from fresh leaves of Bauhinia cheilantha was analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The chemical composition of the essential oil was dominated by sesquiterpenes (78.59%). The major components were identified as (E)-caryophyllene (21.65%), α-pinene (11.75%), spathulenol (4.84%) and caryophyllene oxide (4.62%). The larvicidal potential of the oil was evaluated against instar III larvae of Aedes aegypti, and showed LC50 value of 40.84 ± 0.87 μg/mL. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the essential oil has been evaluated on pro-myelocytic leukemia (HL-60), lung carcinoma (NCI-H292), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), and cervical adenocarcinoma (HEP-2) human tumor cell lines, and this analysis showed that the essential oil was more active against pro-myelocytic leukemia (HL-60) and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines with IC50 values of 8.6 and 18.3 μg/mL, respectively. This is the first report on chemical composition, larvicidal and cytotoxic activities of this essential oil.
