Abstract
Meltwaters draining from the snout of the Chhota-Shigri glacier, Eastern Lahul Valley. Himachal Pradesh, India, were analysed for major cations and anions. The glacier lies on the southern slope of the Himalayas at an elevation ranging between 4000 and 5000 m. The drainage area of the basin is 40 km 2 while the glacier area is 10 km 2. Water quality was determined during the summer ablation period from 17 July to 17 August 1987. Meltwaters from the glacial surface (site 1 and 2) have low solute content (electrical conductivity 5.0–5.92 μs cm −1; Ca 2 0.73 mgl −1; Mg 2′ 0.08mgl −1; Na′ 0.36mgl −1; K′ 0.34mgl −1). Whereas after passing through the glacier, waters are chemically enriched (electrical conductivity 23.2–29.0 μs cm −1; Ca 2′ 0.9 9.9mgl −1; Mg 2′ 0.5–0.35mgl −1; Na′ 0.7–0.8mgl 1; K′ 0.4–1.4 mgl 1). The variations of solute concentration in meltwaters at the snout is related to its discharge. The water movement within the Chhota-Shiggi Glacier appears to be through the subglacial and englacial channels.
