Abstract

The discernment of chemical order or the simultaneous presence of several types of magnetic order by means of Mossbauer spectroscopy is discussed for both metallic solid solutior and intermediate alloy phases. The tendency for iron to preferential, sites in intermetallic compounds is revealed by an analysis which combines line position and intensity. The existence of chemical order may also require an analysis of the shape of the abstrorptin pattern. As typical examples, the complex magnetic order in Pt3−x Fe1+x (near Pt3Fe), chemical ordering in solid solutions of iron in vanadium, and preferential site occupation in compounds of the FeMn system are considered.
