Abstract

Alfalfa saponins purified by four different methods were compared by their respiratory-inhibiting activity, specific rotation, infrared spectra, and by the different monosaccharides released on hydrolysis. A procedure involving ion-exchange and carbon-column chromatography preceding cholesterol precipitation was found to give saponins with the greatest respiratory-inhibiting activity.
