Abstract

AbstractThe air-formed film on iron can be stripped with bromine in methanol but the fragmentsare highly contaminated with ferrous bromide, which can be removed by heating at 300°c in a stream of nitrogen. Chemical analysis then yields values for the film thickness that are in agreement with those obtained by other methods. The presence of hygroscopic ferrous bromide in the films stripped from stainless steel provides an alternative explanation for the conclusion that the passive film was characteristic of hydrous metal oxides with gel properties.
