Abstract

The outer cyst wall and inclusion material fromBdellovibrio bdellocysts were isolated and their chemical composition was determined. The outer cyst wall is primarily peptidoglycan containing glucosamine, muramic acid, alanine, glutamic acid, and diaminopimelic acid. The cyst walls are resistant to lysozyme, but are rendered sensitive following deacylation and N-acetylation. Isolated inclusions were degraded quantitatively to glucose by HCl and by amyloglucosidase, whereas α-amylase degraded the polymer only partially with the release of reducing groups. The inclusion material is therefore an amylopectin-like polysaccharide, being a polyglucose containing both α-1,4 and α-1,6 linkages.
