Abstract

Experiments on the analysis of protein and lipid from material obtained from isolated rat lungs by alveolar micropuncture technique and micropuncture rinsing technique have been performed. Microdisc-electrophoresis and micro thin-layer chromatography have been used to evaluate the protein and lipid components of the sampled material. Four non-plasma proteins have been observed. Three of them migrate electrophoretically faster, one slower than albumin of rat plasma. The last one mentioned is mainly, if not exclusively, located within the alveoli. The only lipids identified were phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol. The concentration of phosphatidylcholine in the rinsed material was 15.3 ± 3.8 S.E. mg%. The phosphatidylcholine: cholesterol ratio (w/w) is between 5:1 to 15:1.
