Abstract

ABSTRACT A keratose sponge Chelonaplysilla erecta n.sp. from shallow water of the Mediterranean coast of Israel is described. C. erecta differs from congeneric species mainly by being a larger and usually upright growing sponge and by its longer and thicker spongin fibers. In addition the species shows an unusual feature for a sponge of the family Aplysillidae: its dendritic fibers anastomose frequently with each other.
