Abstract
Following its designation as a free international city and special self-governing province, Cheju island has initiated a number of large-scale economic development projects. One of the most ambitious is the plan to become a hub for medical tourism in Northeast Asia, in order to benefit from this highprofit growth industry and to revitalise the island's stagnating tourism sector. This chapter examines the shortcomings in Cheju's traditional tourism, and compares Cheju's strengths and weaknesses as a medical tourism destination. It analyses possible target groups and introduces the various development plans for medical tourism. The chapter discusses Cheju's prospects for turning its ambitious plan into reality and analyses in what ways the various projects might contribute towards improving shortcomings in Cheju's tourism industry.
