Abstract

A list of the 445 species of mosses known to occur on the island of Newfoundland, Canada, is presented with reference to published reports since 1973. While preparing a detailed bryogeographical analysis of the mosses of the island of Newfoundland (Brassard 1983), the need for a new comprehensive list of Newfoundland mosses became apparent. This list covers the island of Newfoundland, and excludes the adjacent mainland territory of Labrador, which is politically part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Since the publication of the previous list of mosses of the island of Newfoundland (Tuomikoski et al. 1973), a large number of species have been added to its flora, mostly resulting from my own field and herbarium studies or those of my students and associates (Belland 1981, 1983; Belland & Brassard 1980a,b, 1981, 1983; Brassard 1975, 1976, 1983; Brassard & Weber 1977, 1978; Brassard et al. 1976; Fife & Brassard 1980; Hancock & Brassard 1973, 1974; Hedderson et al. 1982; Weber & Brassard 1976). Recent taxonomic and floristic studies have also clarified or documented the status of many mosses in Newfoundland. The purpose of the present paper is to present an up-to- date list of the mosses of the island of Newfoundland, incorporating reports published since that of Tuomikoski et al. (1973) as well as additional unpublished information. The present list of mosses of the island of Newfoundland includes 445 species (including 41 species of Sphagnum); this compares with 340 species (excluding Sphagnum) for the same region listed by Tuomikoski et al. (1973). For the genus Sphagnum, the present list should be considered merely preliminary, and I have only attempted to cite one reliable published report for each species. Reports detailing large collections of Sphagnum made in Newfoundland by Tuomikoski (in 1949) and by W. Maass have not been published. In the following list genera and species are given alphabetically. Generic authorities follow Crosby and Magill (1981); authorities for species generally follow Crum and An- derson (1981). With some exceptions, my taxonomic concepts at the specific level follow Crum and Anderson (1981), but I adopt a narrower generic concept, especially in the families Grimmiaceae, Mniaceae and Polytrichaceae. Superscripts refer to reports (see literature cited) published after the compilation by Tuomikoski et al. (1973) or to other critical citations of Newfoundland specimens. A list of important synonyms and taxa excluded from Newfoundland is appended. ABIETINELLA C. Muell. abietina (Hedw.) Fleisch.14 AMBLYODON B.S.G. dealbatus (Hedw.)
