Abstract

To recognize the use of the safe surgery checklist as an important strategy in the safety of surgical patients. It was conducted through online literature research in national journals related to the theme. This is an integrative review of the literature, in which data collection occurred from August 2020 to November 2020. The databases used were: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) and Nursing Database (BDENF), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), through search in the virtual health library. A time frame was established for inclusion of publications from 2016 to 2020. With the selection of articles it was possible to perceive that the checklist is an instrument that can contribute significantly to the improvement of the safety of surgical patients if used according to who guidelines, for this purpose it is necessary knowledge about the instrument, team support and improvement of communication between the multidisciplinary team. Through the checklist of safe surgery, nursing can show its role in the face of surgical patient safety measures because, despite being able to be applied by any professional, the nurse must guide their execution.
