Abstract

ABSTRACT By examining the interlibrary loan time for both periodical and monograph borrowing requests, New York University was able to streamline workflow procedures. By comparing the time that “in house” activities took versus the time that it took supplying libraries to fill requests, the interlibrary loan unit was able to identify its most expeditious trading partners and to set up “Favorite” lenders in the RLIN system. These Favorite tables ensure that requests will be routed to supplying libraries in NYU's order of preference. Implementing the Favorite tables improved borrowing and turn around time an average of .4 working days for monographs and 1.3 working days for books. Combined with the workflow procedural changes that came about as a result of this study, total fill time was reduced by 2.3 working days for monographs and 3.2 working days for periodical articles.
