Abstract

Results obtained for Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe and Zn electrodes immersed in aqueous solutions saturated with H 2S are presented and discussed in comparison with the calculated potential/pH equilibrium diagrams. Measurements were carried out with constant, frequently interrupted current by the help of a potentiograph and a cathoderay oscillograph. The method is essentially similar to that developed by Lange and co-workers. Comparing the measured potential steps on the curves with the lines calculated for the equilibria between metals and metal sulphides and between different sulphides or oxides respectively, it can be concluded that observed and calculated values are in relatively good agreement. From the shape of the polarization curves conclusions are drawn on the kinetics of the development and transformation of solid corrosion-product layers.
