Abstract

Abstract A study was conducted to investigate the effects of task motivation (approach or avoidance) and level of Machiavellianism on cheating. As predicted, high Machs were not generally more likely to cheat than low Machs. Both groups were more likely to cheat to avoid punishment than to attain reward. This tendency was significantly more pronounced for the high Machs.
