Abstract

Hypersonic wind tunnels are used to study the performance of space vehicles inside the test specimen under hypersonic flow conditions. This paper aims at designing a chatter free sliding mode controller for regulation of pressure inside the settling chamber of a hypersonic wind tunnel. A sliding mode controller is designed by properly selecting the sliding surface. The performance parameters are evaluated and a performance comparison of sliding mode controller with backstepping controller and LQR controller is carried out based on settling time and peak overshoot. Results with sliding mode controller show that the settling time is 7.5 seconds for the set points of 100 ∗ 105 Pa and 50 ∗ 105 Pa with no overshoot. Thus the proposed sliding mode controller scheme is highly efficient in controlling the settling chamber pressure within a short settling time and there is no overshoot with an added advantage of overcoming the chatter effect.
