Abstract

DURING the first year of operation, the Industrial Research Institute of the University of Chattanooga signed 46 research contracts with industry in eight different states. Several projects have been successfully completed but many are long-term problems of a fundamental nature. Four new processes developed have already been placed in production and eight patents have been applied for and assigned to the sponsoring firms. Some of the more fundamental work has been described in 15 publications by staff members in technical journals. Since the inauguration of the Industrial Research Institute, Sept. 20, 1945, the staff has grown from a director and a secretary to a technical staff of 12 full-time technologists. The first unit of the main research building was completed in 1946 and later in the same year adequate shop facilities were established in an adjacent building.
