Abstract

This paper examines the nature and substance of the Canadian‐European relationship at the close of the millennium. In broad terms, this paper is a summary of the findings of a research group that sought to situate Canadian interests within the larger context of political change and integration taking place in Europe. The context of European integration and expansion are described, as well as security and economic relations with Canada. MacLean suggests that the cause of change in Canadian‐European relations is based in the structural transformations occasioned by the increasing integration taking place in Europe. He concludes that although this relationship has changed markedly, it remains integral to Canadian foreign, security and economic policy.
