Abstract

We find that perturbative processes calculated either by exact QCD matrix elements to order α s 3 or via parton shower models cannot account for the surprisingly large charm meson rate in high- p ⊥ jets as recently observed by the UA1 collaboration. This has interesting consequences for our understanding of the hadronization process. It may indicate that non-perturbative effects are important at a higher mass scale than usually expected and we investigate a simple model based on such an assumption.
