Abstract

The quantum number ‘charm’ was first introduced by Bjorken & Glashow (1964) in their early discussion of the merits of a possible extension of the newly established SU(3) symmetry to an SU(4) symmetry. Some years later, this discussion was taken a step further by Glashow, Iliopoulos & Maiani (1970) in their proposal of a weak interaction model based on currents constructed out of four quark fields, which has turned out to have many virtues, both theoretical and in relation to the experimental data. The fourth quark c, additional to the SU(3) quark triplet (u, d, s), carries charm C = + 1, just as the third quark s carries strangeness s = -1.
